What is Title IX?

What is Title IX

Title IX is the law that prohibits sex discrimination in educational institutions that receive federal funding, which means all schools, colleges, and universities in the United States are required to comply with it. It was created to ensure that women who are competing against men for athletic opportunities will be fairly awarded.

When Title IX was passed in 1972, it originally stated that any school or university that received federal funding could not discriminate based on gender and could not deny an athlete a scholarship because of their gender. As the law evolved, the definition of what is considered a violation of Title IX has also evolved. A Title IX attorney would be the best one to help you understand more about Title IX.

How Does Title IX  Affect Sexual Harassment Allegations?

Title IX is more often associated with sexual harassment cases than it is with those involving athletes. This is because Title IX requires schools and colleges to have policies in place that prevent the sexual harassment of students.

In addition, if a student is being abused or harassed by a fellow student, school or college administrators are required to investigate the case and take action against the students responsible for the harassment. Title IX lawyers can help you understand your rights as a victim of sexual harassment under Title IX.

How Does Title IX Affect Discrimination?

In addition to sexual harassment allegations, Title IX also helps victims of discrimination. Actually, in the past, there were many cases of schools and colleges discriminating against students based on their gender. Under Title IX, this is now prohibited. As a result, the number of women participating in sports has increased dramatically.

If you feel that you are the victim of sexual harassment or discrimination because of your gender, then you may be eligible to receive compensation. This can include your lost scholarships as well as damages for pain and suffering that resulted from being harassed or discriminated against.
